raven - considered the creator of all things. the most important being, the trickster who can become a living thing and make anything happen. according to the TLINGIT, the raven marriage to a mermaid began the Raven clan in Alaska thunderbird - living high in the mountains was the most powerful of all creatures. when his wings flapped, thunder sounded above the clouds and lightening appeared from his eyes hummingbird - said to have put the twinkle in the stars above. when hummingbird appears during a time of sorrow, healing will soon follow orca - the lord of the ocean. his warriors are the dolphins and his messengers are the sea lions. some clans believe that when chiefs die, they become orcas. orca is also a symbol of longevity salmon - the giver of life. he offers his body to feed all his earthly brothers. he is usually carved in pairs and symbolizes good luck wolf - possessed a special spirit power that man had to acquire to become a great hunter. wolf represents family & togetherness bear - a great hunter known for strength, power and human-like qualities. is welcomed as a high-ranking guest to the west coast people. in the plains, he is sometimes considered as a lover sun - released by the raven in the haida legend. the sun's rays bring healing energy, life and beauty loon - the inhabitants of the north west coast, the deep voice of the red-thoated loon was frighteningly aerie. it was said to have delighted in scaring those on shore and in canoes, especially in fog otter - one day the transformer came upon a man sharpening a stick for the purpose of killing him. the transformer took the spear, attached it to the man's rear and turned him into an otter beaver - symbolizes the ability to build. he was known for his determination, creativity and hard work
